driving grassroots change in local business communities. The awards are designed to recognize organizations for
their efforts to foster employee health and well-being while enhancing organizational perance. The award program
highlights a variety of workplaces, large and small, profit and non-profit, in diverse geographical settings.
Applicants are evaluated on their efforts in the follog five areas: employee involvement, work-life balance,
employee growth and development, health and safety, and employee recognition. Awards are given at the local and
national level.
APA Style
Main article: APA style
American Psychological Association (APA) Style is a set of rules developed to assist reing comprehension in the
social and behavioral sciences. Designed to ensure clarity of communication, the rules are designed to "move the
idea forward with a minimum of distraction and a maximum of precision." The Publication Manual of the American
Psychological Association contains the rules for every aspect of writing, especially in the social sciences from
determining authorship to constructing a table to avoiding plagiarism and constructing accurate reference
citations. "The General at of APA is most commonly used to cite sources within the social sciences. General
guidelines for a paper in APA style includes: typed, double-spaced on standard-sized paper (8.5" x 11") with 1"
margins on all sides. The font should be clear and highly reable. APA recommends using 12 pt. Times New Roman
font."
Databases
APA maintains a number of databases, including PsycINFO, PsycARTICLES, PsycBOOKS, PsycEXTRA, PsycCRITIQUES,
PsycTESTS, and PsycTHERAPY. APA also operates a comprehensive search plat, PsycNET, covering multiple
databases.
PsycINFO
Main article: PsycINFO
PsycINFO is a bibliographic database maintained by APA. It contains citations and summaries dating from the 19th
century, including journal articles, book chapters, books, technical reports, and dissertations within the field
of psychology. As of January 2010, PsycINFO has ed ination from 2,457 journals.
History
Founding
The APA was founded in July 1892 at Clark University by a small group of around 30 men; by 1916 t were over 300
members. The first president was G. Stanley Hall. During World War II, the APA merged with other psychological
organizations, resulting in a new divisional structure. Nineteen divisions were approved in 1944; the divisions
with the most members were the clinical and personnel ( counseling) divisions. From 1960 to 2007, the number of
divisions expanded to 54. Today the APA is affiliated with 60 state, territorial, and Canian provincial
associations.
Dominance of clinical psychology
A professional in the U.S. or Cana must hold a gruate degree in psychology (MA, Psy.D., Ed.D., or Ph.D.), or have
a state license, in order to use the title "psychologist". The exception to this is the profession of
school psychologist, someone with an Education Specialist (Ed.S) degree who can be certified by boards of
education to practice and use the title "psychologist". The most commonly recognized psychology professionals are
clinical and counseling psychologists, who provide psychotherapy, or minister and interpret psychological tests.
Requirements vary state-by-state for acemics in psychology, as well as for government employees.
Psychologists in the United States campaigned for legislative changes to enable specially trained psychologists to
prescribe psychiatric medicine. New legislation in Louisiana, New Mexico, and Illinois has granted those who take
an ditional masters program in psychopharmacology permission to prescribe medications for mental and emotional
disorders, in coordination with the patient's physician. This legislation has not come without considerable
controversy. As of 2009, Louisiana is the only state w the licensing and regulation of the practice of psychology
by medical psychologists who prescribe medications is regulated by a medical board (the Louisiana State Board of
Medical Examiners) rather than a board of psychologists. While other states have pursued prescriptive
privileges, they have yet to be ful. Similar legislation in the states of Hawaii and Oregon passed through their
respective legislative bodies, but in each case the legislation was vetoed by the state's governor.
In 1989, the U.S Department of Defense was directed to create the Psychopharmacology Demonstration Project. By
1997, ten psychologists were trained in psychopharmacology and granted the ability to prescribe psychiatric
medications.
In the United States and Cana, full membership in the American Psychological Association requires doctoral
training (except in some Canian provinces, such as Alberta, w a master's degree is sufficient). The minimal
requirement for full membership can be waived in circumstances w t is evidence that significant contribution or
perance in the field of psychology has been me. Associate membership requires at least two years of postgruate
studies in psychology or an approved related T are a number of U.S. schools ing aced programs in clinical
psychology resulting in a master's degree. Such programs can range from forty-eight to eighty-four units, most
often taking two to three years to complete after the undergruate degree. Training usually emphasizes theory and
treatment over research, quite often with a focus on school, or couples and family counseling. Similar to doctoral
programs, master's level students usually must fulfill time in a clinical practicum under supervision; some
programs also require a minimum amount of personal psychotherapy. While many gruates from master's level
training go on to doctoral programs, a large number also go directly into practice—often as a licensed
professional counselor (LPC), marriage and family therapist (MFT), or other similar licensed practice.
